BURSARIES
BIOLOGY
Students must submit completed bursary application forms to the Student Awards Office, 1st floor, R.D. Parker Building. A Bursary application forms can be printed using Adobe Acrobat. Unless otherwise, specified, only one bursary application forms is required for all bursaries.
The Rio Algom Limited Bursaries (10)
- Requirements: Eight full-time students entering the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Extractive Metallurgy or Mining Engineering program, and whose studies involve mining-related environmental rehabilitation; AND, two full-time students from the Serpent River First Nations, who are enrolled in any year of any program. Selection is based on financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.
- Value: $1,500/ea
The Wynn Watson Bursaries (2)
- Requirements: Full-time students enrolled in any year of a Biology program, on the basis of financial need and Ontario residency, as defined by OSAP. Application required. Donated by the staff and faculty of the Department of Biology.
- Value: $500/ea
Christopher and Eva Doherty Bursary
- Requirements: The bursary is awarded to a student entering the first year of full time study with at least a “B” average. The student must maintain a minimum “B” average to continue receiving the award in subsequent years of study. Preference will be given to Northern Ontario students who are studying in a discipline in the health sciences, and can demonstrate financial need. Application is required. This award was established by their children to honor Dr. and Mrs. C.J. Doherty. Dr. Doherty served on the Laurentian University Board of Governors from 1960 to 1968 and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of law by the University in 1985.

The CIBC Wood Gundy/Franklin G.T. Pickard Memorial Awards
- Requirements: Full-time students enrolled in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th of a program in Biology, Chemistry or Mining Engineering that involves mining-related environmental rehabilitation. Recipients must submit a short personal profile. Based on academic standing, leadership and extra-curricular activities, Ontario residency and financial need, as defined by OSAP. Application required. Donated by CIBC Wood Gundy Securities Inc., Toronto, Ont. in memory of the late Franklin G.T. Pickard.

The SGA Capital Campaign Bursaries
- Requirements: Students who are SGA members, Ontario residents as defined by OSAP, have financial need, are active in extracurricular activities and meet the other criteria specified below. Students must submit a short statement outlining how they meet criteria. Application required. Donated by the SGA to the University's Capital Fundraising Campaign (1997), the following bursaries are awarded annually

The Melissa Willett Memorial Bursary
- Requirements: Established by family and friends, Melissa Willet was a Laurentian University student studying in the Science program, April 23, 2007 her life was taken from a tragic motor vehicle accident. Melissa bright bubbly spirit will remain in her family friends’ memory forever. This bursary is awarded to aid a student of Laurentian University, who is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Option) program. The recipient must provide a written letter explaining why they are enrolled in the program, what their long term goals are and how they are involved in the community. If no qualified recipient in the Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Option) program, the award may be given to a student in the Bachelor of Science (Anthropology). Application is required.

Bernie and Mary Langlois Family Bursary

Requirements: Established by Bernie and Mary Langlois to provide financial assistance to a student at Laurentian University. The recipient must be enrolled at the undergraduate or graduate level in the Faculty of Sciences and Engineering, Management, Medicine (registered through Laurentian University) or Architecture (once approved by LU senate). Where possible, preference will be given to a student who currently lives or previously resided in the Coniston area. If there is no qualified applicant from the Coniston area, the bursary will be awarded to a qualified student in the previously mentioned programs. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is variable. Application is required.
