BURSARIES

GEOLOGY

Students must submit completed bursary application forms to the Student Awards Office, 1st floor, R.D. Parker Building. A Bursary application forms can be printed using Adobe Acrobat. Unless otherwise, specified, only one bursary application forms is required for all bursaries.

The Rio Algom Limited Bursaries (10)

  • Requirements: Eight full-time students entering the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Extractive Metallurgy or Mining Engineering program, and whose studies involve mining-related environmental rehabilitation; AND, two full-time students from the Serpent River First Nations, who are enrolled in any year of any program. Selection is based on financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application

The McKechnie-Rousell Awards (2)

  • Requirements: A full-time student entering the 3rd or 4th year of the Geology or Environmental Earth Science program, on the basis of financial need, good academic standing and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application required.Donated by the staff, faculty, former students and the Earth Science Club of the Department of Earth Sciences, to recognize the contributions of Donald C. McKechnie and Don H. Rousell in founding the department.

The J.P. Bickell Foundation Awards

  • Requirements: Students of Science or Engineering, with a specialization in Geology, or with the intention of specializing in an engineering field related to geology, mining or metallurgy. Application required.

The Pada Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by the Pada family, friends and associates, in memory of a fine gentleman and noted CVRD-Inco geologist, Vishnu Pada.  He and his two daughters, Brinda and Arti, died tragically in the crash of Air India flight 182 in 1985. This bursary is awarded to aid a full-time student in the Geology program at Laurentian University. The recipient must demonstrate financial need; the recipient must a graduate student from Marymount Academy Secondary School. If no qualified applicant is chosen from Marymount Academy Secondary School, the bursary will be awarded to a full-time Geology Student at Laurentian University. Value is variable.  Application is deadline by May 1.

James F. Davies Memorial Bursary

  • Requirements: “James F. Davies Memorial Bursary”.  Established by Department of Earth Sciences family and friends. James F. (Jim) Davies was the Department of Earth Sciences’s first true economic geologist, a discipline he had an immense passion for.  He joined Laurentian University in 1967, having come from the position of Chief Geologist at the Manitoba Department of Mines, and remained a full-time faculty member before retiring in 1990. Dr. Davies has been a passionate, dedicated, tireless researcher and teacher, supervising the training of a very large number of undergraduate and graduate students over the three decades he spent at Laurentian.  This award commemorates the remarkable and never-to-be-forgotten efforts of Dr. James F. Davies towards education, conducting high-quality research, and building the Department of Earth Sciences at Laurentian University. The bursary will be awarded to a student enrolled full time in the Geology program. The recipient will be selected on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Application is required.

Dr. Robert Williams Bursary 

  • Requirements: Established by family and friends. The purpose of this award is to provide assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in the Geology program who has achieved a minimum 75% average. Dr. Robert Williams, a retired Calgary surgeon, was 89 years old when he followed in the footsteps of his three granddaughters and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from Laurentian University. Dr. Williams embodies the term lifelong learner. He got his first degree in general science in 1941 from the University of Alberta. Two years later, he graduated with a doctor of medicine. He did postgraduate work in surgery in Toronto and Edinburgh, Scotland, then started to practice at the Calgary General Hospital. At the age of 68, he got his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. Application is required.

Bernie and Mary Langlois Family Bursary

  • Requirements: Established by Bernie and Mary Langlois to provide financial assistance to a student at Laurentian University. The recipient must be enrolled at the undergraduate or graduate level in the Faculty of Sciences and Engineering, Management, Medicine (registered through Laurentian University) or Architecture (once approved by LU senate). Where possible, preference will be given to a student who currently lives or previously resided in the Coniston area. If there is no qualified applicant from the Coniston area, the bursary will be awarded to a qualified student in the previously mentioned programs. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is variable. Application is required.
