Bursaries open to any program

 

Students must submit completed bursary application forms to the Student Awards Office, 1st floor, R.D. Parker Building.  Bursary application forms can be printed using Adobe Acrobat.  Unless otherwise, specified, only one bursary application forms is required for all bursaries.

Please ensure your application is complete and that any supporting documents such as letters of recommendation, etc. are sent to the Student Awards Office, 1st floor RD Parker Office.  They may also be faxed at 705 675-4865 or emailed to financialaid@laurentian.ca

 

RUTHCO Bursary

 

The RUTHCO Bursary was established by Nancy Ruth to honour the lives and values of her Sudbury colleagues and friends, Mary Lue Hinds and Anne Cole.

Value: $5000

Recipient: The student recipient will have made a significant contribution to social justice issues and be studying full-time at Laurentian University with preference given to students studying women's studies, social work, or Native human services. The student must have a 75% average, be a resident of Ontario and demonstrate financial need.

John C. MacIsaac Memorial Bursary

 

Value: from $1,000 to $5,000.

Recipient(s): full-time student(s) in any year of any undergraduate program. Recipient(s) must be residents of Northern Ontario, have demonstrated financial need and good academic standing, have shown sincere effort and commitment to their academic endeavours, and present a personal profile and letter of recommendation.

Recipients: full-time students entering the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of the Native Human Services program (preferably), with one award designated to an Aboriginal student (preferably). Selection is based on academic achievement (min. 75% average), demonstrated financial need and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.

OTHER COMMENTS: If there are no qualified students in Native Human Services, then the awards may be given to students in any year of any program.

A gift from the Dowling Horseshoe Club in recognition of the financial needs of students. The Club, founded in 1969, provided residents with an enjoyable competitive setting and contributed to the social fabric of the Dowling community for over 25 years.

Birks Family Foundation Bursaries

 

The Birks Family Foundation has established a plan of annual contributions to the Student Aid

Fund of recognized Canadian Universities for the creation of the Birks Family Foundation

Bursaries.

Christopher and Eva Doherty Bursary

 

This award was established by their children to honor Dr. and Mrs. C.J. Doherty. Dr. Doherty served on the Laurentian University Board of Governors from 1960 to 1968 and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of law by the University in 1985.

Value: variable (up to full tuition).

Recipient: awarded to a student entering the first year of full time study with at least a “B” average. The student must maintain a minimum “B” average to continue receiving the award in subsequent years of study. Preference will be given to Northern Ontario students who are studying in a discipline in the health sciences, and can demonstrate financial need.

Constable Joseph MacDonald Bursary

 

Established in memory of Sudbury’s Constable Joseph MacDonald who lost his life while on duty in 1993.  This bursary honours his commitment and dedication to the young people in this community.

Recipient: This entrance bursary will be awarded to a City of Greater Sudbury secondary school student who will be attending Laurentian University, with preference being given to a student who resides in a Greater Sudbury Housing Community.  The recipient must be a resident of Ontario, demonstrate financial need, provide a letter of reference from their high school and provide proof of residency in Sudbury Housing, where applicable.

Advancement Bursary

 

The Advancement Bursary was established by members of the University Advancement team to encourage students to explore the wonderful world of University Advancement.

Recipient:  Awarded to a student in any year of study at Laurentian University, who works in the Office of University Advancement.  The student must be a resident of Ontario and demonstrate financial need.

Recipients:  awarded to an applicant with a severe mobility or sensory impairment who can demonstrate a social commitment to the improvement of quality of life for people with disabilities.  Confirmation of disability from the Special Needs Office is required.  The student must be enrolled full time and be able to demonstrate financial need.  The recipient must be a resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP.

Bob Agnew Memorial Bursary

 

Established by Donna, Caitlin and Simon Agnew.

Recipient:  awarded to a Laurentian University student, who is a competitive curler. 

Purpose:  Bob Agnew lived in Sudbury (Naughton) for 15 years where he obtained his Masters of Applied Science degree at Laurentian University while working at INCO.  In his free time, Bob enjoyed curling at the Idylwylde Golf and Country Club.  His Family created this bursary to benefit curlers enrolled at Laurentian University in honour of Bob's life as a curler and a student.

Father Brian McKee Council Memorial Bursary

 

Established by Fr. Brian McKee Council #1387

Recipient:  awarded to aid a student in financial need of Laurentian University, a letter must be provided from the Council stating the recipient relationship to the member of the Fr. Brian McKee Council #1387, and/or confirming they are attending a Catholic High School.  Letters from the Parish Priest and/or Principal of their high school must be provided outlining their attendance and involvement.

Rotary Club of Sudbury Bursary

Value is variable

Recipient:  the object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise.  This bursary is awarded to aide a full-time student in any program, at Laurentian University.  The student must demonstrate financial need, be a resident of Ontario and demonstrate the ideal of service in his or her personal, business and community life. 

Student must submit a letter outlining their service.    Bursary application is required.

 

Lacrosse Bursary

 

Established by Dr. George Sheppard to aid a student at Laurentian University.

LUAA-Alumni Association Ottawa Chapter Bursary

 

Established by the Ottawa Alumni Chapter, this bursary is awarded to aid a student of Laurentian University, who is a graduate of an Ottawa area high school. Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

LUAA-Alumni Association Bursary For Adult Learners

 

Established through a bequest from the late A. Les McDonald.  Mr. McDonald credits much of his success in life to having had the opportunity to complete a degree at Laurentian University as a mature student.  He also served as the President of the Laurentian University Alumni Association from 1975 to 1979 and as a member of the Laurentian University Board of Governors from 1978 59 1987.  His motivation for creating this award was to provide assistance to others, who, like himself, decide to return to their studies later in life.  The Laurentian University Alumni Association Bursary for Adult Learners is awarded to students in good academic standing in any year of study at Laurentian University, who were admitted after an interruption of three years or more in their studies and can demonstrate financial need.  The recipient must be a resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP.  Value is variable.  Bursary application is required.

 

Finlay and Clara MacLeod Memorial Bursary

 

Established by family and friends, Mr. Finlay MacLeod moved to Sudbury where he retired from INCO after 42 years of service.  Mr. Finlay MacLeod and Mrs. Clara MacLeod did not slow down in their retirement years.  Mr. MacLeod became an ordained deacon and they served their community and helped many people through countless hours at the nursing homes, hospitals, Telecare, Meals on Wheels, Catholic charities, and their work with the Holy Trinity and Christ the King churches.  This bursary is awarded to aid a student in financial need enrolled at Laurentian University.  The recipient must provide a letter of proof of service of this or her personal, business, and community life.  Value is $500.  Application is required.

 

R.L Beattie Family Award

 

The “R.L. Beattie Family Award” was created in 2008 by Mr. Allan L. Beattie to honour his late father, Robert Leslie Beattie, who passed away in 1953 at the age of 62.  R.L. Beattie arrived in Copper Cliff (now a part of the City of Greater Sudbury) from his father’s Southern Ontario farm in 1911 and took a job as a clerk in the warehouse at INCO. Over the course of his career he rose to be Vice-President, General Manager, and a Director of INCO as well as a Director of the Bank of Toronto and the Toronto General Trust Corporation.  He served with the Canadian Forces in the First World War and was awarded the Military Medal for Bravery.  His Sudbury legacy includes the R.L. Beattie Public School and the Royal Canadian Legion - Branch 224 which was named the R.L. Beattie Branch in his honour.  The purpose of this award is to pay tribute to Mr. Beattie while providing financial assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled full-time in any program. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

J. Conrad Lavigne and Jeanne Canie Lavigne Bursary

 

Established by a planned gift, the purpose of this awarded to aid a full-time student registered in any program. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. The recipient must be a resident of Northern Ontario, and must be taking the majority of his/her courses in the French language. Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

A.C.T./UCT United Commercial Travelers Bursary

 

A.C.T./UCT United Commercial Travelers Bursary  .  Established by the A.C.T./UCT United Commercial Travelers Bursary of America.  The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to a Laurentian University student who is a resident of the City of Greater Sudbury, if no suitable candidate applies, the award can be given to a resident of North Eastern Ontario.  Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

Epps Family Bursary

 

The “Epps Family Bursary” was established in June of 2008 to recognize the generosity of Allan Epps, father of Julie and Duncan Epps. Allan firmly believed in the value of post-secondary education (at times, more strongly than his children did) and encouraged them in various ways to obtain their degrees. This award seeks to provide financial assistance to a Laurentian University student enrolled in any program to assist with the successful completion of university level studies. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is variable. Application is required.

Laurie Bissonette Bursary

 

Established by the benefactor. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University who is entering their 3rd or 4th year in the Commerce program with the intention of pursuing a career as a Chartered Accountant. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. Value is $500.  Application is required.

 

McMullen Family Bursary

 

Established by William McMullen. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student who is enrolled in any program at Laurentian University. The qualified recipient must currently live or have previously resided in the Township of Killarney. The Student Award office will search the Laurentian University database by postal code to ensure the recipient is a resident of the Township of Killarney. If the applicant does not currently reside in Killarney, they must submit a letter stating that they previously lived in Killarney. If there are no qualified recipients from the Killarney area, the qualified recipient can be a child of a parent who is or have been an employee of the William McMullen Medical Office. Bursary applicant confirmation can be obtained from Peter McMullen’s law office located in Sudbury. Value is Variable. Application is required.

 

Blanco-Mialhe Family Bursary

 

Established by family and friends. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to a Laurentian student enrolled in any program who is going to study as an exchange student in a country other than Canada or the USA. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and Ontario residency, as defined by OSAP. Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

Judith Weisz Woodsworth Bursary

 

The Judith Weisz Woodsworth Bursary was established by her family and friends in May of 2008 to honour the first woman president of Laurentian University, 2002-2008.  The purpose of this award is to assist a deserving student, enrolled in any program, who possesses all the attributes of a good university student (academic aptitude and potential for leadership) but who may require financial assistance to gain entry or continue his or her studies at the university.  The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP.  Value is variable.  Application is required.

 

Laurentian University Federation Memorial Award

 

Laurentian and its federated institutions created the Laurentian University Federation Memorial Award to to recognize the sacrifices of our soldiers and their families, of those who give their lives doing what we as a nation have asked of them.

The award will provide full-time Laurentian students tuition for up to four years of study, and free on-campus housing in Sudbury for the first year.

To be eligible, a student must be under the age of 26, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, dependant of a Canadian Forces member killed while deployed on combat or peace support operations, and registered as a full-time undergraduate at Laurentian University in Sudbury or one of its federated universities.

Phillips Family Bursary

 

Established by family and friends. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student enrolled in the 3rd Sports Administrative program at Laurentian University based on their 2nd year academic excellence. St-Aubin Ouellette Francophone Bursary

This bursary, created through planned giving, is awarded to a full-time student in any program who is taking a majority of courses in French. He or she must demonstrate financial need according to criteria established by Laurentian University’s Student Awards Office, live in Northern Ontario and be a resident of Ontario, as defined by OSAP. Value is variable. Application is required.

 

St-Aubin Ouellette Bursary for Student-Athletes

 

Established through planned giving, this award is presented to a student-athlete who is a member of the varsity sports program and receives a recommendation from the team coach as well as the director of Athletics. The student must meet all eligibility criteria for CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) and OUA (Ontario University Athletics) as well as guidelines for athletic bursaries.  The student must be registered full-time in any program, demonstrate financial need in accordance with criteria established by Laurentian University’s Student Awards Office, live in northern Ontario, and be a resident of Ontario as defined by OSAP.  Amount is variable. Lamps 40th Anniversary (1969-2009) Bursary

Established by the Laurentian Association of Mature and Part-Time Students (LAMPS).  The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to a part-time student enrolled in any program at Laurentian University.  Value is variable.  Application is required.

Trebb Family Bursary

 

Established by Laurentian University graduates Ronald and Mary Trebb as a tribute to their three sons Matthew, Andrew and Christopher Trebb who have also attended Laurentian University to inspire others to continue their education locally and in honour of Harry Trebb who strongly valued the pursuit of higher education. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in any program and who is a resident of the City of Greater Sudbury. Established by the Laurentian University Alumni Association (LUAA).  The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to aid a student of Laurentian University who is enrolled in  a graduate program. The bursary will be awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, and Ontario residency as defined by OSAP. If no such student qualifies, the bursary will be awarded to a student in an undergraduate program. Value is variable.  Application required.

Cousin Vinny’s Restaurant Bursary

 

Established by Tylor McNair and Chris Vitiello, both proud Alumni from Laurentian University and proud community members within the Greater City of Sudbury.  Tylor and Chris who, at the establishment of this award, were the co-owners of Cousin Vinny’s restaurant have created this bursary to support students in their studies.  This award is presented annually to one full-time student enrolled in the Economics or Commerce program.  The recipient must demonstrate financial need and must be a resident of Ontario with preference given to a resident of Northern Ontario.  Value of the award is $500.  Selection of the award recipient shall be made by the Student Awards Office at Laurentian University.  Application required.

 

Hillary Afelskie Memorial Bursary

 

The Hillary Afelskie Memorial Bursary has been developed to honour the memory of this young woman’s dream, from a very young age, to teach. This bursary is funded by the Bachelor of Education Student Association (B.Ed.S.A.) and will be awarded to an undergraduate Concurrent Education student. The criteria for this award includes: examples of great promise for his/her future in teaching, strong dedication to academics, a willingness to help others, superior initiative within his/her participation in extra-curricular activities and financial need. Applicants are required to submit a bursary application through the Student Awards office, as well as, submit a 500 word essay to the B.Ed.S.A.  President on “how” they meet the criteria for this award. Hillary’s caring spirit will live on as this award will help other aspiring teachers make a difference in the lives of others.  Value of the award is $500.  Selection of the award recipient shall be made by the Student Awards Office at Laurentian University.  Application required.

 

Graduate Students’ Association Bursaries

 

Established by the Graduate Students’ Association.  Three awards are presented annually during the spring session to three full-time or part-time students enrolled in any Graduate (Masters, PhD or Graduate Certificate) program.  The recipient must demonstrate financial need.

 

Value of each award is $500.  Selection of award recipients shall be made by the Student Awards Office at Laurentian University.  Application required.

 

LAMPS Recognition Award

Value of each award is $700.  Selection of award recipients shall be made by the Student Awards Office at Laurentian University.  Application Required.

The “LAMPS First Nation, Metis and Inuit Recognition Awards” have been developed to recognize Laurentian Association of Mature and Part-Time First Nation, Metis and Inuit Student members who not only excel academically but go above and beyond within the community.
