Applications for tenure-track Tier II Canada Research Chair in Geochemistry and Tier II Canada Research Chair in Environmental Microbiology
January 3, 2012

The CRC Program was created by the Government of Canada to cultivate world-class research and development.  Canada Research Chairs are funded by the Canadian government (www.chairs.gc.ca) and are designed for exceptional emerging researchers. The position is contingent on the successful candidate being approved by the Canada Research Program. These positions are tenure-track.  The Canada Research Chair is a five year appointment.

Tier II Canada Research Chair
in Geochemistry

The Department of Earth Sciences (DES) and Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC) at Laurentian University invites applications for a tenure-track Tier II Canada Research Chair in Geochemistry.

The successful applicant is expected to maintain an existing LA-ICP-QMS facility (fully specified Resonetics RESOlution M50 laser probe installed in October 2010, and a dedicated Thermo-Fisher XSeriesII ICP-QMS installed in 2006) and to lead the effort to obtain additional equipment that will expand and upgrade the existing facilities.

We seek an innovative individual with an excellent record of research and publication, who will provide leadership for national and international collaborative research, and who will develop initiatives involving DES, MERC, the Ontario Geological Survey, and the Canadian mining industry. The Chair will teach two half year courses (half of the regular load) in our BSc, MSc, and PhD programs and help maintain our status as one of the leading global centres in the study of mineral deposits and Precambrian geology. The successful candidate will have access to a wide range of sample preparation and analytical equipment. The department has a full lapidary workshop and full mineral separation facilities, and operates a variety of equipment, including a fluid inclusion stage (equipped with IR), a variety of XRD equipment, a SEM with a top-of-the-line CL detector, and a Raman microscope. Members of the department also have access to EPMA, WD-XRF, ICP-AES, and solution ICP-MS facilities, at preferential rates, in the Ontario Geoscience Laboratories (located in the same building as DES and MERC). Additional information about DES and MERC can be found at www.earthsciences.laurentian.ca and www.merc.laurentian.ca.

Tier II Canada Research Chair
in Environmental Microbiology

Laurentian University invites applications for a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Environmental Microbiology as a research team leader in the new Vale Living with Lakes Centre. The focus of this environmental institute is to advance both basic and applied science to assist in the protection and management of northern aquatic systems, with an emphasis on Boreal and Sub-Arctic areas affected by rapid industrial development (especially mining) and climate change. The fields of specialization for this CRC include - studies of microbial communities and their role in adaptation and recovery of aquatic ecosystems from severe land use and climate change disturbance, understanding key biochemical processes and effects on ecosystem function (e.g. organic matter decomposition, nutrient transport, contaminant detoxification) as well as the development of innovative approaches to bioremediation of industrial effluents (mining effluents in particular). The purpose of the Chair is to advance the position of Laurentian University as a centre of excellence in research and teaching in Aquatic Environmental Science.

We seek an innovative individual with an outstanding record of research and publication, who will provide leadership for national and international collaborative research and become a focus for integration of research initiatives involving the Vale Living with Lakes Centre, the School of Mining, various University Departments, and the mining industry. The Chair will be expected to contribute to our BSc, MSc, and PhD programs and assist in our objective to become one of the leading centres for the protection and management of northern aquatic ecosystems in the world.
