The Centre for Academic Excellence is a hub of resources designed with you in mind. It provides a customized approach through the Academic Advantage, Learning Assistance, Degree Exploration and Career Planning, and the Student Engagement programs.
Academic Advantage
Academic Advantage has qualified and experienced Academic Advisors who can help you make significant decisions about your future, reach your maximum potential, and take hold of everything that higher education has to offer. We offer programs for every stage of your educational experience to support you as you complete your degree.
Early Notification Program
The Early Notification Program is a safety net that provides an intervention at the end of each term. If you are experiencing academic difficulty, this early notification system enables you to evaluate your academic performance, recognize any potential difficulties, and adjust your learning strategies to maximize your chance of success.
Learning Assistance
Learning Assistance is offered through a range of resources and opportunities to improve your ability to learn and to achieve measurable academic success. It provides: Transition Programs, a Writing to Learn Program, a Tutor Training Certificate Program, a Tutor Registry, Peer-Assisted Study groups, and an On-the-Right-Track Program. The Learning Strategists will help you enhance your academic skills, including critical thinking, note taking, essay writing, problem solving, and exam preparation.
Degree Exploration and Career Planning
One of the biggest mistakes students can make is delaying the career planning process until late in their programs. This can result in a) realizing that you are in the wrong program, or b) discovering that you do not have the necessary courses to graduate, or c) being overwhelmed with the tasks involved to find that first job out of school. Degree Exploration and Career Planning will help you prepare to make informed decisions about your career, and to move forward with career development activities in order to engage in a successful job search after graduation.
Student Engagement Program
The Centre for Academic Excellence provides you with opportunities to obtain knowledge and skills through experiences outside the classroom. These learning opportunities include: volunteer work, community service, and co-curricular activities. The Student Engagement Program aims to enhance academic programs, making them even more relevant.
Tutor Training
Students benefit directly from excellent teaching. Although tutors often intuitively use effective strategies, they have been known to teach to a test or focus on short-term rather than long-term improvement. Tutors trained and registered with the Centre for Academic Excellence are aware of the need to explicitly explain and model learning strategies. They are also aware of specific communication behaviours known to improve student learning. If you need extra help, you can benefit from trained tutors who can help you enhance your academic success. Perhaps you can become a tutor, help your peers, and gain invaluable experience working in a variety of environments.
The Centre for Academic Excellence is located on the 2nd floor of the J.N. Desmarais Library.
