Laurentian has been ranked in the top three in total sponsored research income amongst primarily undergraduate universities in Canada for each of the past four years, including two years as #1.

Talk about research collaboration extremes! At the Sudbury Neutrino Laboratory, university researchers are involved in the capture of neutrinos at depths of 6,800 feet (about 2 km) below the earth’s surface; in its mechanical engineering labs, students are testing their lunabot models for NASA’s proposed mining exploration at a distance of 384,405 kilometres into space.

 

Laurentian’s Jeno Tihanyi Olympic Pool holds 2.4 million litres of water - Double Olympic gold medalist Alex Baumann trained at Laurentian University under coach Tihanyi.

 

Tihanyi-trained swimmers have won 251 university medals, setting 10 CIS records and 19 OUA records.

 

Laurentian has awarded 294 honorary doctorates in its 50-year history. Former Prime Ministers Jean Chrétien and Lester B. Pearson, and Canadian astronaut Roberta Bondar are some of its proud honorees.

 

Two outstanding campuses – in Sudbury and Barrie – communities which share many commonalities: a similar population base: 160,000 vs. 186,000; outstanding recreational spaces; multicultural diversity; health and education hubs for surrounding communities; cultural havens; shopping meccas; safe, vibrant communities.

 

Canadian 1st for the 3rd time in three years: Only medical school in Canada (Northern Ontario School of Medicine) to see 100% of its medical graduates granted their #1 selection for residency programs.

When it first opened its doors in 1960, Laurentian offered a total of 16 programs; today, the university offers 175+ PROGRAMS of which 33 are at the master’s and doctoral levels.
