Laurentian SPAD Students Compete at MIT

Group heads to “Super Bowl of Sport Analytics” in Boston

February 27, 2013 – A team of three students in Laurentian’s Sports Administration program have been chosen among the top three finalists to take part in the MIT Sloan Sport Analytics Case Competition, this weekend in Boston, Massachusetts.

The undergraduate division of the prestigious competition is open to students from any country, in any program. “Just making it as a finalist is an unbelievable accomplishment,” said Dr. Anthony Church of the School of Sports Administration. Sports analytics is an emerging field whereby sports data is analyzed to make predictions about performance, fan behaviour and other aspects of sport industries.

The MIT Sloan event has been called “the Super Bowl of Sport Analytics” by Forbes Magazine, and is attended by major sports organizations, broadcasters and vendors. The students, Matt Jackowetz, Darby Reive and Katarina Schwabe will be leaving for MIT on Thursday, and will be vying for the championship on Saturday, March 2.
