March 11, 2013 – Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci announced today an investment of $245,500 from the government of Ontario to support the development of a Forensic DNA laboratory at Laurentian University.
“Laurentian University continues to innovate and offer new educational and training opportunities to its students and to the broader community,” said Bartolucci. “I am very pleased that the NOHFC could support the development of new forensic DNA labs in Sudbury.”
With support from the province’s Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), the university is one step closer to developing forensic DNA laboratory facilities which will help the institution expand its educational programs. The new centre will also help Laurentian offer fee-for-service in DNA analysis and provide professional training of police personnel.
“The establishment of these new facilities will enhance the university’s international reputation for education and research in this increasingly important field of study,” said Laurentian’s Vice President, Research and Francophone Affairs, Dr. Patrice Sawyer.
Laurentian offers the only FEPAC (Forensic Science Education Program Accreditation Commission) accredited programs in forensic science in Canada, dealing with a variety of applications in the legal system including DNA, fingerprints, forensic anthropology, botany, entomology, hair and fibre analysis, toxicology and serology.
