Notes

Students are strongly encouraged to take a 2nd-year course in either Greek or Latin. Those who plan on doing an M.A. in Classics should take both 2nd-year courses.

Students with little or no exposure to languages other than English are advised to start with either Greek or Latin, but not both.

Though CLAS 1006 and 1007 are not required, students are advised to take them since they provide a broad overview of the field and preparation for second- and upper-year courses.

Certificate in Classical Studies (30 cr)

The 30-credit certificate program is designed for those with a desire to broaden their knowledge of the classical world for their own enjoyment or as a complement to their studies in other disciplines. The program is offered to full- and part-time students who are not enrolled in a specialization, major, or concentration program in Classical Studies, as well as to students with a B.A. who wish to undertake additional study in Classics. Students may count a maximum of 12 transfer credits towards this certificate.

Honours Diploma in Classical Studies (30 cr)

On occasion, students who have already graduated with a general 3-year B.A. in Classical Studies desire to obtain the equivalent of a 4-year honours degree, for example, to proceed to graduate school. The honours diploma serves this purpose.

Admission to the Honours Diploma Program requires the successful completion of a concentration 3-year general B.A. in Classical Studies, or equivalent degree, with at least a 70% average in all Classics courses taken in this degree.

The student must successfully complete 30 additional credits in Classical Studies with an overall average of at least 70%. Students must communicate with the Chair of Classical Studies to select an appropriate suite of courses. This will include 6 credits at the 4000-level and up to 12 credits of GREC or LATN courses. The basic requirements are as follows:

6 credits from 4000-series CLAS courses
24 credits from other CLAS/GREC/LATN courses
