Laurentian University is uniquely positioned for earth science studies because of the dynamic geological environment in the Sudbury region. The university is located within a 1.85 billion-year-old meteorite impact crater with spectacular shock deformation features that are observable on campus. Sudbury provides unparalleled opportunities to study rocks from three major geological provinces within a few minutes driving distance from the campus. Rocks abundant in nickel-copper-gold-platinum-palladium are found within the Sudbury region and are actively being exposed and studied by several major mining companies, numerous junior exploration companies, and the Ontario Geological Survey. Our students have the opportunity to work during the summers with these organizations, or assist faculty in research projects throughout Canada and the world. Our students also participate in a wide variety of field schools and field trips, and have travelled as far as Hawaii, Mexico and Spain to further their education in the earth sciences.
• 3 or 4-year programs lead to an Honours Bachelor of Science in Earth Sciences and allow students to qualify for professional registration as a geoscientist (APGO) in Ontario
• Upper-year classes typically have 20-25 students and provide an open learning environment that promotes ready interaction with faculty, graduate students and fellow students
• The graduate Society of Economic Geologist Student Chapter and the undergraduate Earth Science Club organize national and international field trips for students
