Specializations in Modern Languages and Literatures

We do not offer a 4-year specialization degree in Italian or Spanish.  Students specializing in Modern Languages and Literatures take 66 credits in three different languages in a Single Specialization or 84 credits of three different languages in a Double Specialization.

 

Single Specialization in Modern Languages (66 cr.)

42 upper-year credits in a first language (ESPA or ITAL): must include 12 credits at the 4000 level, 6 of which must be language, and a minimum of 6 credits of literature and/or culture at the 3000 level

18 credits in a second language (DEUT, ESPA, ITAL, LATN, GREC, NATI): must include 6 credits of literature and/or culture

6 credits in a third language (DEUT, ESPA, ITAL, LATN, GREC, NATI, FREN/LANG)

6 credits in Social Sciences

6 credits in Sciences

42 elective credits

 

Double Specialization in Modern Languages (84 cr.)

42 upper-year credits in a first language (ESPA or ITAL): must include 12 credits at the 4000 level, 6 of which must be language, and a minimum of 6 credits of literature and/or culture at the 3000 level

36 credits in a second language (ESPA or ITAL): must include 12 credits at the 4000 level, 6 of which must be language,

6 credits in a third language (DEUT, LATN, GREC, NATI, FREN/LANG)

Majors in Modern Languages and Literatures

Major in Italian (42 cr.)

Students with ITAL 1005 or equivalent may do a major in Italian:

42 upper-year credits in ITAL: must include 12 credits at the 4000 level, 6 of which must be language, and a minimum of 6 credits of literature and/or culture at the 3000 level.

 

Major in Spanish (42 cr.)

Students with ESPA 1005 or equivalent may do a major in Spanish:

42 upper-year credits in ESPA: must include 12 credits at the 4000 level, 6 of which must be language, and a minimum of 6 credits of literature and/or culture at the 3000 level.

Pre req: ITAL 1005

 

*Note: Should a student begin the minor at the 2005 level, they are required to take 6 cr of  language courses at the 4th-year level  chosen from ITAL 4006 Intensive Oral Practice, ITAL 4007 Advanced Composition, ITAL 4016 Modern Italian Linguistics, 4017 History of the Italian Language,  (Our 4th-year ITAL language courses are on a 2-year cycle.)

 

Minor in Latin American Studies (24 cr.)

A. Core courses (compulsory)

ESPA 1005  Introduction to Spanish, (6 cr.)

ESPA 2005 Intermediate Spanish, (6 cr.)

ESPA 2306 Aspects of Latin American Civilization and Culture, (3 cr.)

(TOTAL 15 credits)

Electives are divided into two groups, B and C. Students may choose to take either 3 + 6 or 6 + 3.

 

B. Either 3 or 6 credits from the following:

ESPA 3516 Women in the Hispanic World (3 cr.)

ESPA 3226 Film in Latin America (3 cr.)

ESPA 3456 Short Story Spanish America (3 cr.)

ESPA 3506 Hispanic Culture North America (3 cr.)

ESPA 3507 Hispanic Imagination North America (3 cr.)

The Group B courses are offered on a rotating basis (2 per year on a 3-year cycle). Note that in one year of the 3-yr cycle only one eligible course from this group is offered.

 

C. Either 3 or 6 credits from the following :

GEOG-3826EL   Mexico and Latin America: A Systematic Approach (3 cr.)

GEOG-3827EL   Mexico and Latin America (3 cr.)

GEOG-3827FL   Le Mexique et l’Amérique Latine (3 cr.)

The Group C courses are offered every year.

Certificate of Basic Multilingual Competence

The Certificate of Basic Multilingual Competence encompasses competency in both English (for Francophones) and French (for Anglophones) as well as 12 credits from the following four options:

  1. DEUT 2005 and 3005 
  2. ESPA 2005 and 3005
  3. ITAL 2005 and 3005
  4. NATI 2516/2517 and 3316/3317.
