SUDBURY, ON – The Laurentian Lady Vees looked to bounce back from Friday’s loss in a matchup against the 2-1 Western Mustangs. The Lady Vees showed a lot of offensive potential in the home opener on Friday and continued to demonstrate their scoring touch throughout the game. Both teams battled until the final whistle and the Lady Vees came up on top winning 74-64.
Laurentian came out of the gate strong and went into the second quarter with a 26-15 point lead. They continued to outplay the Mustangs and were able to take a dominant 48-28 lead into the half. They kept up the momentum in the second half and were able to finish off the Mustangs and bring their record to 2-2.
The Voyageurs were led from the tip off by guard Sasha Polishchuk (Richmond, BC). After a 40 minute performance last night, Polishchuk was in the game for a total of 39 minutes and managed to score a double-double with 38 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lady Vees struggled however by only averaging a total of 44.8% from the free throw line.
The Mustangs were led offensively by 4th year player Jenny Vaughn, (Dundas, ON), who scored 24 points in 36 minutes of playing time. Annabelle Hancock (Ingersoll, On) and Melissa Rondinelli (Bright’s Grove, ON) also scored in the double digits for the Mustangs with 10 and 14 points respectively.
Lady Vees forward Devanae Bryce (Barrie, ON) also had a gritty performance by battling for many loose balls in the paint and earning jump balls.
When asked about the victory, Laurentian head coach Mike Clarke mentioned that “Western is a strong program and that [the Vees] have been building for a while to knock them off.” Clarke also mentioned, “we are trying to establish the gym as a tough place to play. Teams are dreading coming here and that is what we are trying to build.”
The Lady Vees look to improve on their 2-2 record next weekend as they host Waterloo and Laurier on Friday and Saturday. Both games are scheduled to start at 6 pm in the Ben Avery Gym on the Laurentian University campus.
