SUDBURY, ON –The Laurentian Lady Vees picked up another win on Friday night, after defeating the Waterloo Warriors by a score of 80-52. The win came after a strong team performance on both ends of the court, and helped improve the Vees record to 3-2 for the season.
From the opening tip off, the Lady Vees took control of the game. Within the first 5 minutes of play, each of the 5 starting players had all put points on the board, allowing the Vees to open up an early lead. The strong play from the Vees under the hoop at both ends of the court made life difficult for the Warriors, who left the 1st quarter trailing by a score of 20-6. The second quarter saw more signs of life from the Waterloo team, who were finally able to put some significant up. However, the Lady Vees matched them shot for shot, and entered the half time break with a 42-27. This lead was in part, thanks to excellent play from Erin Simpson, and Emma Decloe, who scored 15 and 13 points respectively.
The second half saw Sasha Polishchuk establish her presence, adding to her already impressive point total, by adding another 20 points on the night. This burst from Polishchuk allowed the Vees to extend their lead to 68-42 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter saw the Vees on cruise control, and by continuing their excellent defensive play, were able to preserve their lead, and walk away with an 80-52 victory.
Coach Mike Clarke hailed the teams’ performance, playing what he described as “the way we wanted to play”. He claimed that they entered the game “not wanting to be out-muscled”, and this is exactly what the Vees were able to accomplish. Coach did admit that the Vees had “too many turnovers in the second” that led to some easy points for the Warriors. Quick to hail the standout performances of Simpson, and Decloe, Coach Clarke will be looking for more strong performances from his team as the face they Laurier Golden Hawks in Saturday’s match-up.
