Game Recap:

SUDBURY, ON – The Laurentian Voyageurs continued their fine run of form by claiming another win, this time, against the Waterloo Warriors. The win came after a low scoring, physical game that saw the Voyageurs pull away in the fourth quarter, and earn a 78-55 victory.

The first quarter of the game was a close and physical battle for points, with both teams playing hard, but failing to establish a lead. This saw the score tied 14-14 at the end of the first, with the game perfectly balanced. The second quarter saw little change, with the physical nature of the game making life difficult for the offensive players on both teams. However, thanks for some excellent offensive rebounding by Nelson Yengue, the Voyageurs were finally able to open a marginal lead, entering the half time interval with the score line reading 29-25.

The second half saw the Voyageurs begin to establish a foothold in the game, showing more effective shooting as the game progressed. Georges Serresse led the charge for the Voyageurs, with his 22 points and 7 rebounds proving to be too much for the Warriors to handle. This surge in the third allowed the Voyageurs to enter the final quarter, leading by a score of 53-45. From here, the Voyageurs were able to tire out the Waterloo team, and the physical game plan of the Warriors finally caught up to them. Laurentian began to pull away, outscoring the Waterloo team 25-10 in the final quarter, leaving the score 78-55 when the referee signalled the conclusion of the game.

Coach Shawn Swords described the game as “ugly”, with the physical nature of the game being more suited to Waterloo’s playing style. However, with the win under their belt, the Voyageurs now look to Saturday’s game versus the Laurier Golden Hawks. This game will see former Laurentian head coach Peter Campbell return to the Ben Avery Gymnasium, where Coach Swords is looking to “bring the intensity early” in a game expected to be played at a completely different tempo from the game against the Warriors.
