SUDBURY, ON – After a convincing win against the Waterloo Warriors, the Lady Vees next opponent came in the form of the Laurier Golden Hawks. The sides, evenly matched, played a close game but the Vees were unable to find a lead, and eventually succumbed to a 66-55 defeat when all was said and done.
The first quarter saw back and forth action, with both teams playing a high paced, physical game. The Golden Hawks had a slight edge for a majority of the first quarter, however, as the referee signalled for the intermission, the Vees trailed by a mere 2 points. The second quarter saw some excellent defensive play from the Vees, however, little offensive chances were created, thus eliminating the chances of taking the lead. At the half, despite limiting Laurier to just 10 points in the quarter, the Vees found themselves trailing by a score of 25-19.
After the half time break, the Vees came out hot, with Sasha Polishchuk pulling the strings for the Vees, backed up by some intense play from Devanae Bryce, who drove to the hoop several times to help slim the lead. Entering the final quarter of play, the Vees trailed 40-36. However, it was not to be for the Lady Vees. Despite Mary Scott draining two huge 3 point shots, the Vees could not match the new found efficiency of the Golden Hawks offense. When the final whistle sounded, the Vees found themselves on the losing end of a 66-55 score line.
This loss leaves the Vees with a 3-3 record, which they will be looking to improve upon this upcoming weekend with games against Lakehead and Guelph, both of which will provide a stern test of the abilities of your Laurentian Lady Vees.
