Game Recap:

SUDBURY, ON – The Laurentian Voyageurs continued their fine run of form by racking up another victory, this time, to the dismay of the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Voyageurs saw an impressive all round performance prove to be the key, as they swept aside the opposition 92-63, and improve to a 5-1 record for the season.

With former Laurentian head coach Peter Campbell at the helm of the Laurier Golden Hawks team, an intense atmosphere filled the Ben Avery Gymnasium. This was largely in part to the flying start made by the Voyageurs. Josh Budd led the early assault for the Voyageurs, with his speed and excellent ball handling abilities quickly allowing the Voyageurs to open up a lead. The first quarter saw the Laurentian team develop a 23-16. The second quarter saw Nelson Yengue dominate under the basket. With his accurate shooting, and athletic rebounding ability, he allowed the Voyageurs to remain dominant throughout, and open up a 45-32 lead heading into the second half.

The second half brought some new life from the Laurier team, who shot well in the third period, only to have Alex Ratter answer right back. Ratte’s 31 points in the game proved to be a pivotal factor heading into the final quarter. With a slim 9 point lead at the start, the fourth quarter saw the Voyageurs burst ahead, outscoring the Golden Hawks 31-13 in the final quarter alone. The night was capped off by the Laurentian rookies showing their promise, with a 3 minute cameo appearance that delighted the crowd. Ryan Bennett came off the bench to score two, back to back 3 point shots, followed by an impressive spin move from Sam Hirst under the basket to add 2 more points to the Laurentian total. Chalmers, another rookie in the squad was equally impressive in his appearance, playing a key role in the conclusion of the game, with the final score reading 92-63 in favour of Laurentian.

The Voyageurs now sit with a 5-1 record, and a tie for second place in the East Division. They will be putting their winning streak on the line this upcoming weekend, against Lakehead and Guelph Universities.
