THUNDER BAY, ON – After a string of home games, the Lady Vees were in action on the road this week, taking on the Lakehead Thunderwolves in the first of their weekend games. The Vees were outmatched by the opposition, and left the city on the losing end of a 73-48 score line.
The Lakehead Thunderwolves got off to a flying start against the Vees, quickly opening up a 17-8 lead. This lead continued to grow throughout the 2nd quarter, with the Vees finding no momentum throughout the first half. The Thunderwolves tough defensive play made life difficult for the Vees, and their strong physical play led them into the half time interval with a 34-15 lead over the Vees.
The second half saw the Vees provide more offensive threat, adding more point in this quarter than they were able to in the entirety of the first half. The Vees were being led by Erin Simpson with 11 points throughout the game, and were able to slightly narrow the deficit, after outscoring Lakehead 19-15 in the third quarter. However, the final quarter saw resurgence from the Thunderwolves, who restored the strength of their lead and ran away the victor by a score of 73-48, after what Coach Mike Clarke described as “not a great effort” from his team.
The Lady Vees now take their game down to face the Guelph Gryphons, where they will be looking to bounce back from the loss by getting back into winning ways. The Vees will need to display a greater physical presence if they are to gain a result against the Gryphons, as well as provide a more consistent offensive threat.
