THUNDER BAY, ON – The Lakehead Thunderwolves snapped their own spell of poor form, and in doing so, ended the 5 game winning streak of the Laurentian Voyageurs. The Thunderwolves emerged victors by a score of 90-71, after taking control of the game in the second half.
In a back and forth first half, the Voyageurs quickly found themselves down by a score of 11-0 to start the game, with the Thunderwolves starting with blistering pace. However, the Voyageurs were able to answer, and ended the first quarter trailing by a score of 24-15. This would all change in the second quarter, where Laurentian outscored the opposition 26-17, leaving the game tied 41-41 at the half way stage.
Nelson Yengue’s 17 points and 5 rebounds led the Voyageurs, who saw 4 players enter double digit scoring in the game. However, this was not enough to stop the rampant Thunderwolves in the second half. The Lakehead team scored 32 points in the third quarter alone, once again opening up a significant lead. The Voyageurs were unable to answer this surge, and succumbed to a 90-71 loss, their first loss since the opening day of the season.
A positive sign for the Voyageurs was the contribution of Jamie Weldon, who added 13 points, as well as the teams overall performance from the free-throw line, where they shot with 100% accuracy after making 10 out of 10 attempts.
The Voyageurs now look to rebound against the Guelph Gryphons, who will be sure to provide a tough test for Laurentian who need the win to remain close to the Eastern Conference leaders.
