SUDBURY, ON - The first home game of the new year saw the Lady Vees welcome the 5th ranked Carleton Ravens to the Ben Avery Gym. The Lady Vees used a complete team effort to upend the Ravens and move into third in the OUA East.
The teams traded shots in the opening quarter before the Ravens started running away with score, finishing with a 21-11 lead after the first ten minutes. The second quarter saw much of the same as the Ravens maintained their 10 point lead until the closing minutes when the Lady Vees scored 9 unanswered points to finish the half and enter the break down 31-28.
The second half started much the same as the first, with the teams trading shots in a defensive battle that saw the Ravens outscore the Lady Vees 13-6 in the quarter and enter the 4th leading by 10. That’s when Richmond, British Columbia’s Sasha Polishchuk put the Vees on her back and ran away with the game.
After hitting 5 shots in the 1st half, Polishchuk was 7-11 in the second 20, including 4-6 from three-point range, to finish with 34 points in the game. She also grabbed 7 defensive rebounds to finish with 9 for the game. On the strength of Polishchuk’s performance, the Lady Vees upended the fifth ranked Carleton Ravens, 61-57.
When asked about the game, the Lady Vees head coach Mike Clarke made sure to note that it was not one player’s performance who won the game. “We played with passion right from the opening tip and despite the fact that Sasha had 34, this was definitely a team win. The entire team stepped up defensively and forced a great team into tough shots and turnovers. This was the definition of a team win.”
The Vees will look to continue their strong play tomorrow as they welcome the 6-3 Ottawa Gee-Gees. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 pm in the Ben Avery Gym on the Laurentian University campus.
