SUDBURY, ON - The Laurentian Lady Vees battled hard from start to finish against the strong Ottawa Gee Gees. They kept the things close for a majority of the game. However, the Gee Gees were able to surge forward in the fourth quarter, and close the game out with the score-line reading 58-48, in favour of the visiting team.
Carrying the momentum forward from the Vees huge upset of the Carleton Ravens last night, the Vees looked to inflict another upset upon an OUA giant. However, the Gee Gees had other plans, and within minutes, were able to open up a 7-0 lead over the Vees. However, Laurentian's Sasha Polishchuk found her rhythm, and inspired the Vees to a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw end to end action, with both teams battling hard, and not wanting to lose ground on the opposition. It was the Gee Gees that gained the advantage, entering the half way point with a 28-26 lead over the Vees.
This battle raged on after the restart, with both teams fired up, and playing well. Both Laurentian and Ottawa played a fine offensive, and defensive game through to this point, making for an entertaining spectacle to behold. Devanae Bryce's athletic prowess helped power the Vees back into the lead with her strength and speed helping the Vees control the ball possession. Heading into the final quarter, the Vees held a slim 37-36 lead.
However, a reinvigorated Ottawa side emerged in the fourth quarter with a new found sense of efficiency. The Gee-Gees scored 22 points in the quarter alone, largely in part to the strong 3-point shooting of Jenna Gilbert, who ended the night with 19 points. This eclipsed the Vees chances of holding onto the lead, with Ottawas shooting proving to be too strong on the night. At the final buzzer, the Gee Gees were victorious by a score of 58-48.
This weekend of games was a success for the Vees. The Vees competed against stronger opposition and emerged with a victory and a narrow defeat. This marks a promising start to the new year for the Vees, who will looking to carry this form forward down the back half of the season.
