SUDBURY, ON - From start to finish, this game delivered edge of the seat action, topped off by many highlight reel finishes from both sides. However, when all was said and done, it was the Gee-Gees who emerged victors by a score of 87-77.
The first quarter saw both sides emerge with an abundance of desire. Each team was shooting, and defending well, making for a crowd pleasing game. Alex Ratte provided the main offensive threat for the Voyageurs, but it was Georges Serresse that provided the highlight of the quarter. With the Voyageurs trailing by 4 with 1 second on the clock, Serresse unleashed the fade-away jumper from downtown to cut the gap to just 1 point heading into the second quarter. The second quarter saw Ottawa shift their focus onto their 3-point shooting. The Gee-Gees drained back to back threes on several occasions to open up a lead over the Voyageurs. However, the exceptional work ethic of Josh Budd kept Laurentian alive, entering the half time interval trailing by just 10 points.
Laurentian emerged from the break with a revived spring in their step, with Ratte once again leading the charge. His 3 point shooting cut the gap for the Voyageurs. However, with the clock winding down, Ottawa stepped up their game, and hit back with unanswered points of their own. Nelson Yengue once again showed his defensive abilities, this time by delivering an emphatic block in the closing stages of the quarter, shutting down what appeared to be an easy layup for the Gee-Gees. Heading into the final quarter, the Voyageurs trailed 62-51.
Unable to gain a foothold on the game, the final quarter saw the Gee-Gees extend their lead to 17 points, only to see Laurentian offer a late surge, to cut the gap down to 10 points at the final whistle. Georges Serresse led the late surge alongside Ratte, with the pair both delivering multiple 3-point efforts down the stretch. However, when all was said and done, it was the Gee-Gees that emerged the victors, by a score of 87-77.
