Cis: laurentian’s polishchuk, laurier’s coulthard honoured

OTTAWA (CIS) – Basketball players Sasha Polishchuk of Laurentian University and Will Coulthard of Wilfrid Laurier University are the CIS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Jan. 6, 2013.

 

Polishchuk, a fifth-year political science student from Richmond, B.C., averaged 27.5 points per game and accounted for over 50 per cent of the Voyageurs’ points last weekend against the top two teams in the OUA East, Carleton (7-3) and Ottawa (7-3). On Friday night, the 5-foot-6 forward exploded for 34 points and also grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Lady Vees (4-6) to a 61-57 upset win over the nationally sixth-ranked Ravens. The OUA scoring leader resumed her stellar play on Saturday with a 21-point, 10-steal double-double in a 58-48 loss against the Gee-Gees.

 

StFX hockey player Erin Brophy, McGill volleyball player Geneviève Plante and Thompson Rivers basketball player Diane Schuetze were also nominated for the women’s award.

 

Coulthard, a second-year geography student from Oakville, Ont., tallied 54 points over two games versus McMaster and eighth-ranked Windsor, including a record performance on Saturday against the Marauders. In a 93-84 setback, the 6-foot-2 guard scored 39 points on 14 field goals and eight free throws, tying the Laurier single-game marks for most points and field goals made. The talented sophomore was also solid last Thursday against the Lancers when he contributed 15 points and five rebounds.

 

Saint Mary’s hockey player Lucas Bloodoff, Laval volleyball player Tommy Bélisle and Regina hockey player Brock Appleyard were the other male nominees.
