KINGSTON, ON – In their only game of the weekend, the Laurentian Lady Vees took on the Queens Gaels. The game was a back and forth affair, with both teams showing spells of dominance throughout. However, when the referees final whistle blew, it was the Gaels who emerged the victors, beating the Vees by a score of 74-69.
The first quarter saw a rampant start from the Gaels, leaving the Vees in the dust for a brief spell. That was until the Vees found their gears, and quickly hit back with some excellent play of their own. After some strong play, Laurentian managed to claw back to just a 4 point deficit entering the second quarter. The second proved to be more of a defensive battle, with both teams scoring low. The main source of offence for the Vees came in the form of Sasha Polishchuk, who racked up 20 points, and 9 rebounds in the game. However, it was not one of Polishchuks signature performances, making just 7 of her 26 attempts. At the half, the Vees trailed by a score of 37-34.
In the second half, the Vees needed to quickly establish themselves, but Queens had other plans. The Gaels dominated the Vees for the entirety of the third period, which would prove to be costly when all was said and done. The Vees were outscored 22-13 in the third, leaving them facing a 12 point deficit heading into the final quarter. However, a highlight for the Vees was the play of Jenna Davidson. Davidson impressed off the bench, racking up 15 points in just 14 minutes. This was thanks to her effective 3-point shooting that gave the Vees a lifeline late in the game. In the final quarter, the Vees battled hard and significantly cut the deficit down. However, in the closing stages, a couple of missed efforts as well as unlucky bounces halted the Laurentian comeback, with the Vees falling by a score of 74-69.
After what Coach Mike Clarke described as a “back and forth, competitive game”, he and his squad are “looking forward to a couple of homes games next weekend against U of T, and Ryerson, with both games giving us an opportunity to get back on the right track”.
