KINGSTON, ON – The Laurentian Voyageurs were unable to hold onto their slim lead in the fourth quarter against the Queens Gaels on Saturday night. Losing by a score of 84-82, the defeat marked the fifth consecutive loss for the Voyageurs who started the season so successfully.
The first quarter saw both teams play competitive basketball, with the score remaining close from start to finish. The Gaels proved to have a slight edge in the first, taking a 17-15 lead into the second quarter of play. From here, it was a case of more of the same for both teams, trading blows, and maintaining solid pressure. However, this time, the Voyageurs took the quarter, cutting the lead down to just 1 point heading into the second half.
From here, the Voyageurs took control of the game. This was largely in part to Alex Ratte’s game leading 25 points, as well as a stellar performance from Georges Serresse, who contributed 24 points and 8 rebounds to help mount the Laurentian charge. This offensive surge allowed the Voyageurs to outscore the Gaels 30-24 in the third, and take a narrow 5 point lead into the final quarter of play. However, the Gaels bounced back. Led by Greg Faulkner, who is currently the third highest scoring player in the OUA, the Gaels outscored the Voyageurs 25-18, giving them a 2 point edge when the referees signalled the end of the game.
The Voyageurs will now be looking to finally get back to their winning ways in their upcoming games against the University of Toronto and Ryerson next weekend.
