SUDBURY, ON – The Laurentian Lady Vees played host to the Ryerson Rams on Friday night, with both teams looking for a vital win. However, it was the Lady Vees who impressed throughout, and despite collecting an injury to key player Sasha Polishchuk were able to see off a late surge to emerge the winners, by a score of 73-68.
The Rams enjoyed an early spell of possession, winning the opening tip-off and quickly establishing a 10-4 lead. This was quickly countered by a stretch of 9 unanswered points from the Lady Vees, led by the red hot Jenna Davidson, whose 3-point shooting has been outstanding of late. At the first interval, the Vees led the Rams by a score of 21-15. The second quarter saw Sasha Polishchuk find her stride amidst a fast paced game. Polishchuk quickly amassed 13 points, which when combined with Davidson’s 11, allowed the Vees to hold a 42-34 lead at the half time whistle.
The high tempo affair continued after the intermission, with both teams playing hard, and shooting effectively. Polishchuk continued to add to her point total, as well as racking up 7 assists. These assists allowed a total of 4 Vees players accumulate double digit point totals. Heading into the final quarter, the Lady Vees led the Rams by a score of 64-53. Both teams came out battling in fourth, but it was the Lady Vees who suffered a serious setback early on. Leading scorer Sasha Polishchuk went down hard on her ankle and was forced to sit out the remainder of the game. This injury seemed to boost the confidence of the Rams, who pressed harder and harder, chipping away at the Laurentian lead. With the clock showing just 2 minutes left of play, the Rams now only trailed by a single point, setting the stage for an intense finish. With 25 seconds left, Jenna Davidson kept her composure to sink 2 vital free throws, putting the Vees just out of arms reach. When the final whistle blew, the Vees were able to hold on and emerge winners by a score of 73-68, after a highly entertaining affair.
The Lady Vees now look to close out the weekend with another victory against the Toronto Varsity Blues, on Saturday night at the Ben Avery Gymnasium.
