SUDBURY, ON – In search of the weekend sweep, the Laurentian Lady Vees welcomed the Toronto Varsity Blues to the Ben Avery Gym on a snowy Sudbury night. The Vees battled tough, especially considering they were missing the conference’s leading scorer, but it wasn’t enough as the Varsity Blues walked away with a 66-62 win.
The first half was a back and forth affair that saw numerous lead changes in a fairly high scoring half. For the Varsity Blues, it was the Jill Stratton show as she scored 20 points in the half on 8-13 shooting. The Lady Vees, without Sasha Polishchuk after she was injured in last night’s game, were led by sophomore Danielle Harris as she scored 11 points in the half on 4-6 shooting, as the Varsity Blues led at half time 40-38.
The second half saw the defences step up as both teams struggled to find their rhythm. The Blues pulled away in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Vees 19-11 to open a 10 point lead heading into the final frame. Laurentian tried to battle back in the 4th, led by rookie Jenna Davidson as she hit a pair of trey’s but it wouldn’t be enough as the Toronto defence forced a shot clock violation in the dying seconds to secure a 66-62 win.
Stratton led the Blues with 20 points in the contest, all 20 in the first half, while Harris was the leading scorer for the Lady Vees with 17 points. Emma Decloe was also a major factor for the Lady Vees as she recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Vees will look to regroup as they head to Ottawa next weekend to take on the Carleton Ravens and Ottawa Gee-Gees in as they push for the playoffs in the very tight OUA East conference.
