TORONTO, ON – The Laurentian Voyageurs travelled to the University of Toronto to take on the Varsity Blues. After a defeat to the Carleton Ravens, the Voyageurs were looking to get back to winning ways. This is exactly what they were able to do, with Laurentian defeating Toronto by a score of 84-65.
The Voyageurs started the game in rampant form. They were able to control the game on both ends of the court, and quickly established a large lead over the Varsity Blues. At the end of the first quarter, the lead had stretched to 24 points, with the scoreboard reading 34-10 in favour of Laurentian. This lead gave the Voyageurs security for the game, which Coach Swords used wisely, allowing 9 of his players to gain double-digit playing time throughout the game, keeping his players fresh for the next evenings match up against the Ryerson Rams. In the second quarter, Laurentian continued to control the game, and went into the half time interval leading by a score of 53-30.
The second half brought more of the same for the Voyageurs, with their fluid ball movement causing Toronto issues. Georges Serresse continued his fine form, racking up a team leading 19 points and 7 rebounds. The Voyageurs saw 4 separate players score 10 or more points in the game, with the depth of the squad truly being displayed. Laurentian expanded on their lead throughout the third quarter, leaving Toronto with the task of overcoming a 30 point deficit in the final quarter. Despite a cutting the gap down to 20 points, the Varsity Blues could find no answer for the Voyageurs with the final score reading 84-65 in favour of Laurentian.
This win took the Voyageurs record to 9-7, with the second of their weekend fixtures to come against the Ryerson Rams. On their last meeting, a last-gasp shot from Manny Pasquale upset the number 6 ranked Ryerson team. This sets the stage for an enticing rematch with the in-form Voyageurs looking to provide yet another upset.
