Game Recap:

SUDBURY, ON – In the final game of the season, the Lady Vees needed to defeat the York Lions to advance to the OUA playoffs. However, in a hard fought game the Vees fell to the Lions by a score of 65-56, thus marking the end of the season for the Vees.

In the must-win game, the Lady Vees started strong, quickly establishing a lead against the Lions. The Vees were helped by strong rebounding, as well as clutch 3-point efforts from Polishchuk, Moreau, and Patrick. The Vees shot well throughout the quarter, often punishing the Lions for some sloppy defensive play. Danielle Harris rounded out the quarter with a hard-earned basket that saw the Vees enter the second quarter leading by a score of 17-7. However, the Lions found some inspiration in the break and bolted out of the gates to begin the second. Led by the speed of Cyrielle Recoura, the Lions cut into the Vees lead by scoring 7 unanswered points. This would continue for the remainder of the half, with the Lion controlling possession and gradually shrinking the deficit. At the half, the Vees lead has been reduced to 28-27, leaving the playoff hopes of each team dependant on one half of basketball.

To begin the third both teams showed poor shooting, with rushed shot attempts from both sides. However, the Vees enjoyed a spell of excellent play with Polischuk, Harris, and Scott combining well to open up a slim lead for the Vees. At the end of the third, the scoreboard shows the Vees leading 46-43. With the score close, the season would be decided in the final quarter of play. The final quarter was a tough battle, with both teams increasing the physicality of the game. With 6:14 left in the game, the Lions levelled the score. From here, the Lions never looked back. In the final minutes the Lions pulled away, leading by 4 points with 2:30 left on the clock. Despite the best efforts of the Vees they could not cut the gap, and when the game ended so did the Vees season, with the scoreboard reading 65-56 in favour of York.

This loss meant the Vees ended the season with a 5-15 record, and it also marks the final game in Laurentian colours for both Sasha Polishchuk and Kaitlyn Young, as their time with Laurentian comes to an end. The Vees will now look to rebuild in the off season, and return to the court stronger than ever in hopes of reaching next season’s playoffs.
