Wrestling Canada Lutte is pleased to announce that 2012 Canadian Juvenile Women’s Champion at 56 kg, Indira Moores of Laurentian University has been selected as the recipient of the Bob McLeod Scholarship for the 2012/2013 academic year.
The native of Whitefish, ON who is now in her first year with the Laurentian U team, strives for excellence both in the classroom and on the mats. She achieved an 80% average in her final year of high school and under her coaches, Indira has developed into a competitive athlete at her age-group.
We caught up with Indira recently and had her answer the following questions:
When did you start wrestling, where and who have been your coaches to this point?
I started wrestling four years ago in grade 10. I joined the Lo Ellen Park Secondary School wrestling team at the end of September. I started getting suggestions that I should start going to the Rayside Wrestling Club practices. There, Paul Berthiaume and Andy Lalonde were my coaches. They really helped me with my wrestling that year and really encouraged me to go to tournaments like provincials, Ontario Winter Games and nationals even when I was really intimidated. Because of them, I ended up winning Ontario Winter Games and placed 2nd at Nationals that year.
After that year, Rayside Wrestling Club switched to Sudbury Regional Wrestling Club where Andy Lalonde and Sheldon Burton continued coaching me.
In my Grade 12 year, Andy had the opportunity to start a wrestling team with Laurentian University, and so I decided to stay in Sudbury.
As this CIS season moves towards Conference and National Championships what are your goals and your team\'s goals?
Unfortunately, I recently hurt my knee at Junior Provincials, so my goals for this year have been altered a bit. Originally, I was hoping to place top three at OUAs this year, and hopefully continue on to place at CIS, but after spraining my MCL, I will be doing as much as I can to be healthy for Junior/Senior Nationals in March.
As for the Laurentian Wrestling Team, I hope that we have some top three finishes at OUAs and some top finishes at CIs. I hope that my team mates wrestle very well at OUAs and finish the tournament very satisfied with how they wrestled, and hopefully gain a lot of experience. After all, we are a very young team and have a lot of things we need to improve on, but also a lot of potential as well.
I hope that as a team at Junior Nationals we have some top finishers. It would be very good for Laurentian to start placing at the bigger tournaments to help encourage people to come to Laurentian and help our team grow.
Is there a specific career area you are looking at now or will that be something you determine further into your studies?
I am currently studying Health Promotion in the Human Kinetics Faculty at Laurentian and I would definitely like to have a career in the same field. I am very interested in Public/Community Health and I think it is very important to help people gain knowledge. Maybe further into my academic career I will start considering options like being a Dietitian or Physiotherapist.
What aspirations do you have for international success representing Canada?
I would love to have the opportunity to represent Canada internationally. I have never had the opportunity to wrestle for Canada but it has been one of my goals since grade 11.
The Bob McLeod Scholarship is awarded annually to an age group national champion who has combined their wrestling pursuits with a solid academic performance entering or at the post-secondary level. It is named after the long-serving member of the national association’s Executive Committee who passed away in 1985 and is supported by his family and their generous donations.
