A week after the disappointing cancellation of the Valentine Invitational due to heavy snows in Boston, the Laurentian women's indoor track team traveled to Guelph this weekend to compete at the Last Chance Invitational. They returned with two medals, two personal bests and two additional qualifiers for the OUA championships.
Katie Wismer (Sudbury) placed 2nd in the 1500m, running a season's-best time of 4:50.11. She was followed by Alyssa Bedard with a personal best time of 5:00.89 and Michelle Kennedy who ran 5:07.96, also with a personal best.
Adrienne Wilson (Kitchener) returned with her second medal in two meets, placing 3rd in the 1000m with a time of 3:06.57. She was followed by Samantha Edwards (Toronto) in 9th with a time of 3:12.82, Coralea Kappel (Barrie) in 12th with 3:19.25 and Jenna Thornber (Uxbridge) in 17th with 3:25.69. Thornber also ran the 600m, finishing 13th in 1:49.74.
Triple jumpers Alicia Violin (Sudbury) and Jackie Bray (Midland) hit OUA qualifying standards in their signature event, placing 4th and 5th respectively with jumps of 10.98m ad 10.82m. It was an indoor personal best for Violin. Bray kept the Laurentian faithful on the edge of their seats by waiting until her final jump to break the qualifying mark.
Both athletes also competed in the long jump with Violin placing 7th in 5.00m and Bray 9th with 4.64m. Violin's mark broke the OUA standard. Violin also ran the 60m hurdles, finishing 4th with a time of 10.43.
Athletes from Guelph, Windsor, McMaster, Western, Laurier, Laurentian and several track clubs competed in the event.
The Laurentian squad's next meet is the OUA Championships this Thursday and Friday in Windsor.
