Women's hockey make history

TORONTO, ON - The Laurentian Voyageurs women’s hockey team kicked off their inaugural season with an exhibition trip Toronto to face the Varsity Blues and the Ryerson Rams.  After dropping their first game in program history to the Varsity Blues 1-0, the Voyageurs made history on Saturday by defeating the Rams 3-2.

On Friday night against the Varsity Blues, the Voyageurs found themselves in a back and forth battle through the first 20 minutes as neither team was able to put one in the back of the net.  The game remained scoreless until the 16:32 mark of the second frame until Toronto’s Amanda Ricker was able to put one past the Voyageurs’ Emily Toffoli.  That would be all the offence the Blues needed as they secured the 1-0 victory.

On Saturday afternoon, the Voyageurs walked in to the Mattamy Athletic Centre, the former Maple Leaf Gardens, seeking to make historic in one of hockey’s most historic buildings.  The team came out flying against Ryerson and was rewarded early as Amanda Pereira potted a rebound to get the Voyageurs on the board with the first goal in program history.  They didn’t stop there as Sam Moreil went bar-down on a breakaway to push the lead to 2-0 at the 15:16 mark of the period.  The Rams were able to even the score before the first period was over as they potted a pair of late goals less than a minute apart.

The second period was a see-saw affair but neither team was able to grasp the lead.  It wasn’t until late in the 3^rd, when Lauren Langille tipped home a Nicole Vigilanti point shot on the power play at the 15:47 mark that the Voyageurs were able to go ahead and hold on for the 3-2 victory.  Laura Deller got the win after stopping 31 shots.

With their first pre-season victory in the books, the Voyageurs will look to continue to build momentum towards the regular season as they head to Ottawa for a pair of exhibition games in two weeks’ time.  They open their inaugural regular season at home on October 5^th as the Guelph Gryphons come to town for a 7:45pm puck drop.
