All applicants to all Music programs (BA, BFA, BA/BEd concurrent) must perform an entrance audition in their principal instrument or in voice. Audition requirements for each instrument and for voice are listed below. All auditions are for classical voice and orchestral instruments excepting jazz for the following instruments: bass, guitar, piano, saxophone, trumpet and voice. Jazz audition requirements are listed below under Jazz. Copies of the music should be provided for the audition panel.
Successful applicants will be enrolled in MUSC 1406 Applied Major I or MUSC 1455 Applied Major Performance I. Students whose performance level is close to but just under the Grade VIII R.C.M.T. (Royal Conservatory of Music at Toronto) performance level may be requested to take MUSC 1401 Applied Music Proficiency I as a preparatory courses to MUSC 1406 at the discretion of the Music Department. MUSC 1401 may count towards their BA degree as a non-music elective.
All performers are required to play or sing two pieces in contrasting styles. All instrumentalists are required to play technical exercises or scales appropriate to their instrument.
Accompanists
Singers are required to have an accompanist at their audition. An accompanist can be supplied for a fee if a singer is not able to provide one. Singers must bring original copies of their music for the accompanist to their audition.
Accompanists are not necessary for instrumental auditions, but are always preferable if the instrumentalist can provide his or her own. Recorded accompaniment may be used for those auditioning in jazz (i.e., Aebersold, Ricker, Dobbins etc.).
Recorded Auditions
Live auditions are always preferred. Recorded auditions (DVDs and CDs) are acceptable only when distance prevents an applicant from auditioning in Sudbury in person. Due to the inherent problems and limitations of recorded performances, it is very much to the applicant's advantage to play a live audition. Recordings must be of very good technical quality and should be less than six months old.
Instruments
Students are expected to have purchased their own instrument by the time school commences in September for all applied music courses. It is recommended that the appropriate applied music professor be consulted before an instrument is purchased.
Theory Placement Test
A theory test with an ear test component will be administered by the Music Department to all prospective Music Concentration students. This test must be taken at the time of audition. Exceptions are made to students who have a proof of successful completion of RCMT Grade II Rudiments. If you are auditioning by tape, you will be given the test on the first day of theory class (MUSC 1115). Those who do not pass the placement test will be requested to enroll in MUSC 1101 and 1102 Introduction to Music I and II as preparatory courses for MUSC 1115. MUSC 1101 and 1102 may count towards their BA degree as non-music electives.
Audition requirements are listed below alphabetically by instrument. For all jazz instruments, see under Jazz.
