Course Description

Explores the role of magic and other occult practices in Greek and Roman religion and culture. The origins, literary depictions, philosophical critiques and social background of magical thought and practice are examined. Some consideration is also given to the conflict of magical tradition and cult with early Christianity and ancient philosophy and science. PREREQ: 3 credits in Classical Studies plus 3 credits in Classical or Religious Studies. (lec 3) cr 3
