This course will study the historical and biographical works of Xenophon with an emphasis on the literary, social and historical content. This course will analyze the development of the historical genre in the fourth century through an in-depth study of the historical works of Xenophon: the Hellenica and the Anabasis as well as his historical novel: the Cyropaedia and his biographies of the Spartan King Agesilaos and Hiero, the tyrant of Syracuse.
