This course will examine the influence of surface chemistry on the in-vivo performance of biomaterials. Some of the topics covered will include cell/surface adhesion, biocompatibility of implant materials, corrosion of metallic implants in-vivo and surface modification strategies for improving device function and lifetime. An introduction to surface analytical techniques that are commonly used for studying biomaterials will also be included. Current advances in this area including nanobiotechnology and intelligent materials will also be discussed. (lec 3) cr 3
