This course examines how the development of ancient Greek biography shaped our view of historical figures such as Pericles, Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, and analyses the originality of this literary genre from the Athenian encomia of the fifth century B.C.E. down to the Parallel Lives of Plutarch. The relevant texts will be read in translation. PREREQ: one of CLAS 1006, 2056, or 3016, or permission of the instructor. (lec 3) cr 3. Students may not retain credit for both CLAS 4056 and CLAS 3056.
