This course is a study of the society and culture of Hellenistic Egypt under Ptolemaic rulers from the conquest of Alexander in 332 BCE to the death of Cleopatra VII in 30 BCE. Topics include the Hellenistic monarchy; the relationship between the rulers and their subjects; the queens of Egypt; poverty and properity in the market economy; the ethnic composition of the society; gods, temples, and cults; and the art and archaeology of Alexandria.
