Course Description

The focus of this course is on understanding the roles of sex, sexuality, and race in nationalist movements. To "sex" the nation is to explore the set of practices, symbols, ideals, and institutions that define and differentiate men and women's membership to the nation. The concepts of racial and sexual purity often emerge as features of nationalism. These are explored alongside racial and sexual identities that are considered deviant to national identity, using examples from the Canadian and global contexts. (lec 3) cr 3.
