I am an anthropological archaeologist with a particular interest in methods. During my graduate career I undertook fieldwork in Egypt, Syria, and Ghana. The Middle Stone Age technocomplex, the Aterian, was the subject of my doctoral dissertation. I was particularly interested in determining if it is possible to examine questions such as the nature of the origin of modern human behavior from artifact samples that come from what would normally be considered poor contexts. Since completion of my dissertation I have focused on work in Ontario. I particularly enjoy teaching an archaeological field methods course for undergraduate students. I am privileged to have been able to work on a number of Huron Wendat sites in Simcoe County.

Research Focus

My current research projects include: 1) examination of survey methods and factors that contribute to variation in how archaeologists perceive artifacts (with Banning and Stewart), 2) the nature of the faunal resources harnessed by Iroquoian migrants into Simcoe County, 3) the chemistry of glass trade beads of the seventeenth century, and 4) changes in the relationship between people and their environment in Simcoe County between 1450 CE and 1650 CE.
