Dr. John Gunn holds the Tier 1 CRC in Stressed Aquatic Systems and is the founding Director of the Vale Living with Lakes Centre at Laurentian University. He worked as a senior research scientist for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources for 25 years before joining Laurentian as a CRC in 2003.
Education

- M.Sc. Zoology Univ. of Ottawa 1976
- Doctorate Zoology Univ. of Guelph 1987
Research Focus
Dr. Gunn's research interests involve the study of multiple stressor (e.g. acidification, metal contamination, climate change, habitat loss, invasive species) effects on Boreal Shield lakes and the processes of biological recovery from disturbance. He heads up a large project on land/water linkages in recovery from mining and smelting effects, and a lake manipulation project looking at the effects of changing wind and surface temperatures on lake ecosystems. He is also interested in Hg dynamics and he works with colleagues with the OMNR and OMOE on the factors that affect Hg bioaccumulation in sport and food fish species. He is beginning some new work on the role of anadromy (sea migration) on contaminant accumulation in the Hudson Bay Lowland area and will be working with stable isotopes (C,N,H,S) to assess changes in diet and habitat in these northern fish species.
