Mark was born and raised in Toronto. After accepting that his hockey career was not going to be a paying proposition, he turned to treeplanting for sustenance. It took only twenty seasons in the bush for him to realize that there were easier ways to make a living; he turned to academia. He is now an Associate Professor and Director of the MA History program, and his field of expertise is forest

Research Focus Mark's focus is all aspects of forest history in Canada. His published work analyzes the history of Canada's pulp and paper industry and government-business relations in Ontario's forest industry.
