Taima Moeke-Pickering is a Maori of the Ngati Pukeko and Tuhoe Tribes from Aotearoa - New Zealand. She is the Director of the School of Native Human Services (Social Work) at Laurentian University. Her passion lies in research and exploring determinants of culture that strengthens communities. An advocate for the development of Maori-based and Indigenous education programs, she was a key developer of the first Maori Counselling bachelor degree in New Zealand. This degree program embraces Maori theories and models of practice, and established new standards for counselling responsibility with Maori peoples. Dr. Moeke-Pickering was the first Head of School of Te Toi-a-Kiwa School of Maori, Pasifika and Indigenous Studies at Wintec (Waikato Institute of Technology). Dr. Moeke-Pickering is also an Adjunct Professor with the Whare Wananga o Awanauirangi based in her hometown of Whakatane. Her doctoral thesis focused on decolonization strategies as a social change model examining case studies of native-based programs with helping professionals based in Aotearoa and Canada. Dr. Moeke-Pickering has participated in a number of research projects with the intent to highlight Indigenous worldviews and pedagogies.

Research Focus Currently Taima is completing articles on Indigenous theories and pedagogies particularly highlighting teaching practices, the situating of self-determination and decolonisation factors in the classroom. She is currently doing a research project with the Salvation Army, Sudbury on the Women and Family Shelter.
