Laurentian University School of Native Human Services and Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute

 

A formal agreement was signed between the Laurentian University School of Native Human Services and the Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute in September 2009 resulting in a joint collaboration to deliver the Honours Bachelor of Social Work Program. The anticipated start date of this exciting collaboration is October of 2010. Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute and Laurentian University have agreed to enter into this agreement to strengthening partnerships and collaborations in ensuring Aboriginal learners’ access and success in postsecondary education and training.

 

The purpose of the agreement is to promote excellence and quality in the development and delivery of post-secondary education and training.  The objectives of the agreement are to;

  • Ensure quality programming for students at the Institute;
  • Improve Aboriginal student accessibility to post-secondary education and training programs
  • Enhance the retention and success of aboriginal students in these collaborations;
  • Respond to the employment and training needs with First Nation communities of Manitoulin Island and the North Shore: and
  • Contribute to the advancement of self-governance, sustainable economic development and self-sufficiency within the First Nation communities of Manitoulin and the North Shore.

 

Program to be delivered

 

            Honours Bachelor of Social Work Native Human Services

 

 Entrance Requirements

 

To be eligible potential students in this collaboration must hold advanced standing for prior courses/programs taken at the college or university level. The specific criteria for advanced standing is:

  • eligible students must have a related college diploma with a minimum GPA of 3.2 (80%) or
  • hold a related Bachelorate Degree
  • eligible students must also have a minimum of 2 years paid employment in the field of social work.  

 

Based on these requirements for advanced standing, the student will be then be eligible to write a Challenge Exam for NSWK 3605 Field Education Placement and challenge two 3 credit courses from the 4th year and if successful will be exempt

 

Placement and two 3 credit courses from the 4th year.

 

Plan of Study

 

Classes will be held 2 nights a week. Over one year a total of four (4) six credit courses will be delivered. The delivery of the 2 nights a week time frame is to be determined through consultation by the people. 

 

Graduation

 

Upon successful completion of the proposed plan of study, graduates will graduate with an Honours of Bachelor of Social Work: Native Human Services, which is a recognized degree in social work. Graduates will also be eligible to register with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.   Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute reviewed other options and found that Laurentian University’s School of Native Human Services program contributed to the advancement of self-governance as stated in the above objectives.
