Program Description
Situated within Laurentian University’s Center for Research in Human Development, the Master of Arts or Science in Human Development (DEVE) is one of the few bilingual interdisciplinary programs of its nature in Canada.
The DEVE program integrates knowledge from the fields of Psychology, Sociology, Human Kinetics and related disciplines to provide a broad understanding of human development over the life span. Through core and elective courses as well as personal research, students are given the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge from an interdisciplinary standpoint under the supervision of faculty from varying academic backgrounds.
Available on a full-time or part-time basis, the program provides students with the skills needed to complete their education and begin a career or to further pursue post-graduate studies in human development, psychology, sociology, kinesiology, gerontology, public health, medicine or related fields.
In addition to providing an interdisciplinary post-graduate education, the DEVE program also aims to provide students from Northern Ontario quality instruction within their geographical region. Unlike institutions in larger urban areas, Laurentian University’s Master of Arts or Science in Human Development offers a more personalized education through small class sizes in addition to approachable faculty and staff.
Applying to the Program
Prerequisites
Students accepted into the program typically have an Honours Bachelor Degree in Psychology, Human Kinetics, or Sociology (or a related field) with an overall average of at least B+. Should a student not meet the minimum academic standing, the student has the option of successfully completing a qualifying year in one of the three academic disciplines.
Students without an academic background in the above three disciplines wishing to be considered for acceptance into the DEVE program will have their qualifications examined and may be required to complete additional course work or a qualifying year.
Those students looking to pursue the M.Sc. path are required to possess a B.Sc. degree in one of the parent disciplines or a related field. At Laurentian, for instance, the parent disciplines are Kinesiology or Behavioural Neuroscience. A related field at Laurentian would be Nursing or Biology.
Application Process
1. Application forms are now on-line
2. They should be completed and returned with required documentation to the Office of Admissions with the application fees as instructed. Students who go on to register in the program will have this fee applied towards their tuition.
3. The office of admissions will notify applicants of the decision on their admissibility. If admissible, applicants will receive a response document.
4. Applicants wishing to accept the offer of admission must return the response document to the office of admissions. Failure to return the response document will mean that applicants will not receive a registration package.
5. Any initial inquiries about the program should be made to the program coordinator or the Office of Admissions.
Deadline
The application deadline for September admission is open.
