Program Requirements

Program Streams

Full-time and part-time students may choose either the course stream or the course-plus-thesis stream. Distance students may undertake a thesis only if they are prepared to come to campus to meet with supervisors and use the library. All classes are held in the evening.

 

1.   Course Stream

  • two 3-credit core seminars (6 credits)
  • one 3-credit practicum development (3 credits)
  • one 6-credit practicum (6 credits)
  • five 3-credit elective courses (15 credits)
  • Seminar in interdisciplinarity (non-credit)
  • Language Requirement (non-credit)

 

2.   Course-plus-Thesis stream (single-disciplinary focus optional)*     

  • two 3-credit core seminars (6 credits)
  • one 3-credit practicum development (3 credits)
  • one 6-credit practicum (6 credits)
  • two 3-credit elective courses (6 credits)
  • one 9-credit thesis (9 credits)
  • Seminar in interdisciplinarity (non-credit)
  • Language Requirement (non-credit)

 

*  Students enrolled in the Course-plus-Thesis stream may choose to write either an interdisciplinary thesis, or a single-disciplinary thesis in English, Religious Studies, Music, Philosophy, Theater Arts, Women Studies, Classical Studies, Italian Studies or Hispanic Studies (all disciplines represented by qualified faculty members in the program). This “disciplinary focus” will appear on the student’s degree description and may serve as an additional credential to those who plan to go on to a PhD in a particular discipline.

 

Non-Credit Requirements

1. Seminar in Interdisciplinarity. The seminar provides students and faculty with a common context for interaction and discussion of thematic, methodological, and theoretical concerns of Humanities studies; it will meet at least six times across the fall and winter terms. Students are expected to attend a minimum of 80% of the seminars.

 

2. Language requirement. All students must demonstrate reading competence in a second language. 

 

Additional Information

  • Students must maintain a minimum B (70%) standing to complete the program.
  • Full-time students must spend a minimum of two years (4 semesters) registered at Laurentian.
  • Full-time students must complete all degree requirements within four years of the original date of admission.
  • Part-time students must complete all degree requirements within six years of the original date of admission.
